From our by-laws, Article 1: Purpose; "The purpose of The Northwood Lake Watershed Association is to preserve and protect the quality of Northwood Lake and its surroundings for the collective interests of lake users." In 1992 a group of concerned Northwood Lake residents formed the NLWA to deal with the worsening milfoil infestation problem. Since then our activities have continued to include the monitoring of the ever present milfoil in our lake, as well as providing educational resources to our members and the lake community at large. Our elected officers and directors come from all three towns that have a shoreline on Northwood Lake, Northwood, Deerfield, and Epsom. The Northwood Lake Watershed Association is a 501(c)(3) non-profit New Hampshire corporation in good standing .
A Brief History of the NLWA Submitted to NorthwoodLake.com by Jim Papadinis In 1992 Rodney and Janet Swanson and James and Pamela Papadinis drafted a letter informing lakeside residents of lake problems asking for donations and volunteers to form a lake association to address problems of the lake and do what must be done to have a healthy quality for Northwood Lake. A Letter from Jim Papadinis, former President of NLWA Dear Friends; We, as a family, for many years took Northwood Lake for granted and did little to protect it. Then, in 1991 our regional association had a call for volunteers to help post flyers around the lake properties warning of a treatment to eradicate an exotic plant that had found its way into the lake. I thought that would take care of the problem, but as I questioned some of the personnel involved I learned that the treatment would not eliminate the roots and the condition would be back to its then present form in 2 to 4 years. The state would treat the lake only once, the cost being over $46,000. If state funds were available in the future the state would only match funds from other sources. This meant that we, who had our homes, camps and lots on the shore around the lake would have to accept the responsibility for the lake's well being. Thus, the Northwood Lake Watershed Association was formed and many individuals gave of their time and money in an effort to protect the quality of the lake. The new association was also instrumental in identifying ecoli entering the lake from one of the tributaries. NLWA helped locate its source and its elimination. Because there was a lakewide organization, we gained some support from the towns of Northwood, Deerfield and Epsom in its two follow up treatments. The NLWA was able to sit with three state agencies and come up with a plan to attempt some degree of containment of the milfoil plants via draw down and root freezing. In closing, I urge all that have not renewed their membership and those that have not joined, to do so now. Those who have accepted the responsibility of overseeing the health of Northwood Lake deserve our support. Sincerely, Jim Papadinis Member in good standing since inception Past President 1992 - 1996
Personal Memories Submitted to NorthwoodLake.com by Pam Papadinis We have tried many approaches to control the dreaded milfoil. The trips around the lake, on foot, to distribute the first newsletter. One year we had a scuba club from Manchester come to locate milfoil - NLWA members volunteered their boats and plastic bottles so we could mark locations. It worked but our lake looked tacky for awhile with clorox and milk bottles bobbing around. One of the divers came face to face with a loon underwater. Scared the loon half to death - diver too. The late nights of "get the newsletter mailing out" - piles on the floor, folding, stamping organizing. Checking the channel near the boathouse - small boats and wading (shallow there) with sticks looking for our enemy (we found a lot). I think most people around the lake are now aware that it is up to us to keep Northwood Lake beautiful. The new group of leaders are keeping up the "above and beyond" attitude. Support them.
